American Beach Summer Mantle

To me there are two decorating seasons, Winter and Summer (OK, three if you include my Christmas overhaul).  Well I’ve been antsy to put up my Summer theme mantle so here it is.  As usual, I gathered anything that might work with my theme.  This year I am going for a Ralph Lauren meets Pottery Barn beachy nautical collected look.

To me, this included items that were:

  • American (the flag)
  • Cotton
  • Wood
  • Stainless Steel
  • Galvanized
  • Rusted
  • Red, White, or Blue
  • Glass
  • Sand, Shells, & Rocks
  • Nautical Decor
Here is how I layered all the junk.

My mantle and the space above it are very large.  The American Flag does a great job of filling the space.  Then with lifts and levels created with blocks of wood, a favorite book, a cake stand and an old piece of luggage help to give height to the smaller items below the flag.

A collection of star fish fill in any empty spaces adding to the beach feel.

Rocks gathered from the beach, an anchor from Ross, and a stainless steel fan that has been kicking around our house (originally purchased from Lowe’s) all contribute to the collected over time look.

I washed and saved clear soda bottles from a past party and packed them into an old galvanized bin, to me it looks like a party ready to happen.  What is more beachy then blue glass?  Last year at one of my favorite stores, Harbor Freight, I found this rope tie for a ship for just $1.80.  I’m kicking my self for only buying two.  What’s more Americana than a cotton flag.  A good summer read “MockingJay” is the perfect color and ads dimension to the glass bucket as a shelf.  And more starfish.  I love those beautiful little creatures.

About five years ago I found this antique ships wheel from China at a local store.  It was only $100 and I had to have it.  Worth every penny.  This year I set it in front of the fireplace, since we won’t be turning it on durring the summer.  It adds warmth to an otherwise black hole.

Well there you have it, Summer has arrived early at the

Richards’ home and I couldn’t be happier!

Bring on the heat and trips to the ocean, lake and water parks!
