UPDATE: Salvaged Wood Block Lamp Assembly

One of the very first posts I wrote on Burlap & Denim was about a Salvaged Wood Block Lamp that I made.

Tutorial for building a lamp I LOVE these lamps.  The pair used to be on our night stands, but I have since moved them to the family room so I can enjoy them all day.  BUT, this means they are in the most used space of our house, filled with 4 boys.  And with boys comes rough housing.  Yesterday one of these lovely’s got knocked to the ground, sparked and almost started a fire!  I’ll admit it, I was frustrated and mad that my beautiful lamp needed to be rebuilt and re wired.  I took this opportunity to photograph the details for you.

Here you can see the hole I drilled with a wood drill bit and shoved a long threaded wire conduit inside.  The drilled hole met up with a crack in the wood partway down the block.  I threaded the wire through the crack and up through the conduit.

Being the  cheap scate that I am, I used an old lamp from around the house.  I kept the bits in order.

I layered them back onto the lamp starting with the decorative cover (mine is painted pvc from an old lamp).  Continue with the nuts, washer, lamp shade holder, and last nut.  (oops, sorry about the watermark/text blunder)  Follow that up with the vase-shaped brass base thing, I know very professional name.

Trim up the wires for a fresh start.  I cut off the fried ends.  Then carefully cut the plastic sheathing but NOT the wires.  Slip the sheathing off the wires.

Insert the exposed wires into the openings in the bottom of the main lamp guts.  Tuck the wires into the holders.  Tuck it all into the vase base thingy.

Cover the black lamp guts with the metal cover (mine is gold).  Attach a lamp shade (mine doesn’t require the u shaped lamp shade holder, but I kept it on the lamp just in case I change out the shade later).  Insert bulb, cross your fingers and turn her on!  Yay, it worked!

Building a lamp is really, REALLY, easy.

I’m now looking for a new spot for these where I can enjoy them but they won’t get banged around so easily.
