This is a really fun easy AND inexpensive craft! A Magnetic Chalkboard Message Center. We did these at girls camp last year and they turned out really cute. The supplies are inexpensive and you probably already have most of them on hand.
- craft paint
- Valspar (Lowes) chalkboard paint
- sponge brushes
- electric range covers (Dollar Store)
They come in a two pack. One is 8″ and the other is 10″. The demo for this post is the smaller 8″. The girls in our group really didn’t care which size they got. I laid down a piece of wood and drilled two small holes at about 10 and 2 o’clock (it doesn’t matter if they line up with the picture since it will be painted over, 10 and 2 are just for spacing purposes).
At camp I had each girl start by painting the center black with the chalkboard paint. The hardest part is getting the black to be smooth, I just softly swirled the foam brush in large circles. To create a great border, we followed the lines from the design printed on the tins with the black chalk paint. It dried in a few minutes. Then we filled the border with a solid turquoise and added a few dots around. After the paint dried we fished the ribbon through the holes and tied a knot on the back side. I also tied a knot in the top so the ribbon would always show the decorative design.
Didn’t these turn out adorable? And for soooo cheap! I think they cost about $1 each. Perfect for a big group of girls at camp.
To make clean up a breeze, we used disposable bowls and plates for the paint and threw away the foam brushes. Each girl was given a few pieces of chalk and they hung them above their sleeping spots. Then they could write notes to each other and reminders about what was coming up the next day.
