It’s the MOST Wonderful Time of the Year

I was browsing my most recent Pottery Barn catalog and came across the most adorable sign.  It was made of wood and has the words “It’s the most wonderful time of the year” hand panted in a vintage sign style.  It captivated me and I’m still not sure why, but I simply adore it.  With a price tag of $169, I knew I could take this project on myself.DIY Antiqued Christmas Sign

I started out searching the world wide web for the perfect fonts that would give me the same feel as the original.  Here is what I came up with.  It’s close enough for me.

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year Layout

I dug around in my basement till I found a great old frame that would also act as the canvas for the painting.  It is an inexpensive poster frame made of wood, with a plexiglas insert and MDF backer.  It’s aproximatly 22″ X 28″.    Find a similar one HERE. DIY Painted Christmas Sign

I threw away the plexiglas and removed the MDF and painted the smooth face with Old White Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.  I used an inexpensive foam brush.  I did two coats to ensure full coverage. Annie Sloan Paint in Old White

Then I used my Silhouette and cut out the words from the graphic up above.  I used an off white vinyl I purchased from JoAnn’s.  It is the Cricut brand since I couldn’t find the Silhouette (plus it was on sale for around $5).  I centered the vinyl and actually loved the way it looked! I even threw it in the frame and contemplated being finished.   It's the MOST Wonderful Time of the Year

Then I pressed forward, wanting a more striking result.  I brought out two paints that were in the color scheme I was going for.  They were both matte wall paint from my recently finished basement.  I applied them with a disposable chip brush using a mostly dry brush.  Here is the dark gray with a hint of blue. I took care to make sure the edges of the letters had paint surrounding them so when I removed the letters, they would be easily recognizable. It's the MOST Wonderful Time of the Year

With my friend the X-acto knife, I carefully peeled off the vinyl letters revealing the crisp Old White paint underneath. It's the MOST Wonderful Time of the Year

I was so excited to see the final result!

I know it isn’t even December yet, but I am excited to have this hanging in my family room!  I love the colors and simplicity of this graphic project.  It was simple, easy, and quick (after I found all the fonts).

If you would like to make this sign, just take the black and white graphic to a sign shop and have them cut it out of vinyl, or if you are luck enough to have a Silhouette, just upload the image and cut it out.  Send me a pic of your finished Knock Off!  I’d love to see yours!

  • I guess only folks that have more money than they know what to do with would pay $169 for that sign, ouch. I don’t have any of the newer die cutting machines but I could paint it on myself. I’ll have hubs make the frame, use some plywood and off I go.
Would love to have this sign in my living room over holidays. We’re going to be in a craft show so might just have to make it for craft show first. If it doesn’t sell then I’ll keep it for our home. What would you charge for this sign? I never know what is good sellable price. Will make it as similar to yours as can except for words painted, not in vinyl. Appreciate you giving us measurement of yours. I might already have a frame big enuf for this. I buy them at thrift stores even when I don’t know what I’ll need them for in future. Have to think ahead. I have several frames taking up room in my sewing room. Have another box with frames out in shed, need to dig them out.
Hope mine comes out halfway good as yours. Might paint the frame red or green, any opinions on that? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Happy days and hope you enjoy this season.
