DIY Ocean Art

Once again I profess my love of the ocean.  This time in my DIY Ocean Art.  I have wanted to do a giant work of art on a canvas for a while and have been shopping for a good deal on canvases.  They were all so expensive!  I had made one in the past and thought I might go that route again until I found a giant canvas at Burlington Coat Factory that was on clearance for $20.  It was a photo of a lotus blossom and lily pads.  The photo was okay, but I had bigger plans for the canvas itself.  I propped it up on it's side over my fireplace.  It fit the space beautifully. That's when I decided to create  my own abstract painting of the ocean for my summer beach theme.  I had seen a few similar that I loved, one from ZGallerie and others around town, but none fit quite right or had the colors that I was looking for.  Okay, Read more [...]

Creating a Gallery Wall

I love to decorate my home, you all know that.  That love can create a problem, where to store all of the decor that I am not displaying at any given time.  I like to change everything up for summer, fall, Christmas etc.  All of the art that I had collected was beginning to take up too much space!  It was stacked in piles in my basement storage room.  I had planned on building a wall system to hang all of it down there, but my husband had a different idea.   He suggested we hang it all up in our bedroom.  Our master bedroom has vaulted ceilings and the walls have been difficult to decorate.  Anything that I put on them seems dwarfed by the wall and ceiling height.  We had thought about adding a bunch of wainscoting here but haven't had the money or the time.  The gallery wall might give us a similar effect, his plan Read more [...]

Kids Castle {An Under the Stairs Playhouse}

When we built our house almost ten years ago, we did not finish the basement.  Over time, piece by piece we have slowly finished up different rooms.  Today I am going to share our under the stairs playhouse, or Kids Castle.  This is our modified floor plan of the basement.  Central, under the stairs is where our castle is.  The blue line is the pop out that we added to make the space larger than the builder intended.  It doesn't stick out very much into the room, just barely further than the mechanical room.  We added two windows to the front for natural light and a rounded door in the center.  If you look close, you can see we also added an interior window between the stair wall and the back side of the castle.  The yellow box shows where the trap door is and the red line shows where the rock wall ladder is.  The Read more [...]

$1 Camp Craft {Magnetic Chalkboard Message Center}

This is a really fun easy AND inexpensive craft!  A Magnetic Chalkboard Message Center.  We did these at girls camp last year and they turned out really cute.  The supplies are inexpensive and you probably already have most of them on hand. Supplies craft paint Valspar (Lowes) chalkboard paint ribbon sponge brushes chalk magnets electric range covers (Dollar Store)  I searched all over for a good deal on chalkboard paint and I found it at Lowe's.  I bought the quart size and chose black.  It runs around $14 and could make at least 50 of these chalk boards.  I found these beautiful electric burner covers at the Dollar Tree.  The great thing about these burner covers is that they are magnetic!   They come in a two pack.  One is 8" and the other is 10".  The demo for this post is the smaller Read more [...]

Home Decor Trends 2014 from the Winter Market

At the Las Vegas Market I filtered through thousands of chachkies and accessories that will be coming to a store near you soon.  Here are a few of the items that I feel will be big home decor trends 2014.  Archaeology Accessories Over a decade ago my husband and I were able to visit the amazing Cairo Museum.  When we were there I was amazed at the low tech displays and cases holding the Egyptian antiquities.  Most did not have moisture control, alarms or the like.  When I found this display table, I was a amazed at how similar it was to those I'd seen years earlier.  The simple wood and glass case could hold just about anything in your house, can you imagine it as a sofa back table?  Or how about in an entry?  I LOVE it!  {This table is a bit more than an accessory, but I had to include it in this post.} Adding Read more [...]

7 New Lighting Trends from Winter Market 2014

Last week was the Las Vegas Design Center's Winter Market for 2014. It is a huge show with over 32 floors of home furnishings and it happens twice a year in Las Vegas, NV.  It brings furniture manufactures together with interior designers and retail stores.  My husband and I jumped int he car for the short 5 hour drive, and believe me, with out the kids it flew by.  We spent two full days walking all the floors looking for the best in design.  Today I am excited to share the 9 new lighting trends that I saw for 2014. 1. Metal Chandelier Shades I saw this trend over and over and over.  Some were a thin fine metal mesh like this barrel shade.   It felt refined and formal. Another was this ball chain style.  These chains were hung individually around an oval form.  Very cool and industrial.  These were a rustic Read more [...]

Anthropologie Knock Off Ideas {a Tour of the London Store}

Do you ever like to shopping for decor ideas?  I'm not talking about going to a big furniture store looking for your next sofa, although I enjoy that too.   I'm talking about Anthropologie.  I'm that girl that loves to go to EVERY Anthro but I am not interested in the whimsical skirts and funky jackets.  No, it is their store displays that always have me coming back for more.  They are so inspiring and unique.  I can usually be found with my draw dropped, eyes wide open, and mind spinning trying to figure out exactly how they "did that" and figuring out where I could do something similar at home or on a job site.  I have to confess that doing store displays for Anthropologie would be THAT dream job for me, you know, the one you would do for free if they let you?  For now I'll just use one idea for my own Anthropologie Read more [...]

Faux Stainless Steel Removable Backsplash for Renters

My sister moved to England, take a moment and weep for me.  Okay, back to business.  Here is the kitchen in the great town home she is renting in Oxford.It's a great house with lots of great features but the backsplash wasn't one of them.  A photo I saw made the tile appear to be red and yellow check.  My first thought was McDonalds!  "Butta Buh Buh Bah, NOT Lovin' it."  Since you can see straight from the front door, down the hall, over the kitchen table and through to the kitchen ALL from the front door, we knew something had to be done, we'd add a faux stainless steel removable backsplash for renters! In real life, it is a bright orange yellow and cream check, not much better than I had imagined. Before she moved we made a stop in at Lowe's and picked up five rolls of stainless steel Contact paper.  It is called Read more [...]

DIY Fabric Business Cards {in Burlap and Denim}

I'm excited to share my Burlap and Denim business cards with you!  I whipped them up before my first blogging conference last year when I realized I hadn't ever ordered any and it was too late to do so.  I figured that since I am a crafty interior design blogger I could make some myself and here is what I came up with, DIY fabric business cards.  Can you see the beauty in these?  They are made from burlap AND denim!  First I printed off my logo, website url, and email on one side and a photo of myself on the other (after all, you meet a LOT of people at a blog conference) all on a thick cream pearlescent card stock.  Then I stopped in at my Home Fabrics and picked up a yard of stiff dark denim.  I cut it the size of a standard business card.  To take care of the burlap, I fond this cute chevron printed burlap ribbon Read more [...]

“Soda Lighted” to wish you a Happy Birthday

 It is the start of a new year and so time to share a new small birthday gift that is perfect for teens.  In my case teenage girls from our church youth group, or Young Women.  My niece had received a soda bottle with the phrase "Soda Lighted" (instead of so delighted) as a going away present from her leaders and I thought it was adorable!  I decided to purchase a variety of fun bright sodas from a local supplier.  We have a cute toy/candy shop that has a large selection but Cost Plus World Market also has a great supply.  And before any of you worry, the one on the right is Apple Beer, a delicious apple flavored soda.   Supplies Needed: Card stock Hole Punch Ribbon or Pipe Cleaner Paper Straws Free Printable   I made a label that would fit any bottle.  I designed them in bright fun colors Read more [...]
