Nautical Mantel

It is officially SUMMER here, and the kids are out of school!  As usual I have changed out my family room’s decor into a summer theme.  It is similar to last year’s All American Beach theme.  This is my Nautical Mantel.

I already had the old pallet up on my mantel from past designs and decided I’d leave it up to add texture and depth.  Then I used silver thumb tacks from the dollar store to attach each of the nine nautical flags to the pallet.  I love how the pallet acts like a frame for all of the small flags and makes them feel like one large piece of art.

Since my family room is two-story, I needed a huge mantel to balance the space, the over sized pallet helps fill the space above the fireplace.

A bunch of random nautical, beachy or just cool antiques got layered in front of the pallet.

In a niche on another wall near my entry I tacked up an old fabric american flag.  Then I placed my DIY Marquee Star in front.  With the outlet connected to a light switch below, turning it on and off is a cinch.

The star gives off great ambient light at night or during the day.

I like to switch up my furniture for summer too.  Since more people are home throughout the day I pull my gray chairs forward so we have seating all around the sherpa crate coffee table (especially if you include the hearth).  I also switch out all of my red pillows for white, blue, and tan.

And of course, my SURF sign made from burlap and denim (the inspiration for my blog name) hangs above on a second floor wall.

So sit back and relax and enjoy the summer!

  • Love your style! I always look forward to your posts,

    • Awe, thanks Deb. I checked out your blog, you are quite the painter/transformer! Thanks for stopping by.

  • Yes I have something to say, I’m so envious of your home, gorgeous. I love that surf flag, think I need to make one for youngest daughter and hubs. He’s an old surf nazi from San Diego. He’s 49 now so that’s why he’s an “old” surf nazi. that’s what they used to call older guys that have surfed most of their lives in San Diego.
That’s quite a fireplace and hearth you have, love the pallet with the flags. Would you be willing to tell us where you got them? I have a nautical theme for part of the summer.
Your flag up on the niche is great with the lights.
We don’t have a fireplace but I use our shutter shelf like one. After a few weeks or sometimes less time I get tired of it and change it. I thoroughly enjoy shopping in shed and house for things to put on the shelf. Do you enjoy styling your mantel?
I sure do enjoy your blog, you do great projects. Happy Days

  • Hey where did you get your beautiful mantle? We are getting one too, as my builders are horrible and with a choice of only two. I did find some on Hayneedle, but am wiggy about buying onliine.
